Even as Beijing authorities claimed that the city’s latest Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is under control, leaked internal data shows that authorities are merely covering up the true scope of the outbreak.
Hospital documents obtained by the Epoch Times show that the coronavirus is still spreading in the city, contrary to what the Beijing Health Commission is reporting.
The documents consist of virus reports submitted by the Beijing Ditan Hospital to the Health Commission.
Part of the data covers the results of daily nucleic acid tests. According to data from June 19, a total of 800 test samples were performed on 773 people in the hospital alone. Of these, 246 tested positive and were admitted to the hospital between 10 p.m. of June 18 and 10 p.m. of June 19.
The official data from the Health Commission, however, claims that there were only 205 cases in the entire city of Beijing (not just the Beijing Ditan Hospital) on June 19. Beijing has 20 designated hospitals for treating COVID-19 patients, with the Beijing Ditan Hospital being only one of these.
The data then from the Beijing Ditan Hospital indicates that the real number of COVID-19 cases in the city is much higher than what is being officially reported.
Other data from the Beijing Ditan Hospital also seems to confirm this. Among the documents obtained by the Epoch Times is a compilation of fever patient’s test results from the hospital’s fever clinic from June 17. The documents show that, of the 288 patients that visited the hospital’s fever clinic, 26 tested positive for COVID-19.
The documents contradict official data from the Health Commission, which claimed that there were only 21 newly confirmed cases in Beijing on June 17.
That Chinese authorities are covering up the true scale of the coronavirus outbreak in Beijing shouldn’t be surprising considering the regime’s history of hiding their real coronavirus numbers.
Ever since the pandemic began, Beijing has been hellbent on covering the scale of its outbreak up, trying to make it appear that they’ve had the virus under better control than they really do.
Despite these efforts, several whistleblowers have come out of the woodwork, alongside documents that show what exactly is going on inside the country.
Just last week, a well known Hong Kong microbiologist who was part of the fact-finding mission sent to Wuhan during the early days of the pandemic came forward about how Chinese authorities were already covering up the outbreak as far back as January. According to the University of Hong Kong’s Yuen Kwok-yung, the sites they visited as in Wuhan showed evidence of being cleaned out to hide any evidence of the coronavirus.
Other medical professionals have also tried to come out about the real state of the coronavirus outbreak in China in the past. However, Beijing has been able to silence most of these, with a number of whistleblowers remaining missing to this day.
At least one whistleblower, Dr. Li Wenliang, was later reported as having died from COVID-19. Authorities then co-opted Li’s story, declaring him a “martyr” for China in a bid to draw attention away from the fact that he was silenced for trying to spread the truth about the outbreak.
In addition to whistleblowers, a number of leaks, similar to the ones from Beijing Ditan Hospital, have also come out, giving a clearer picture of what’s actually happening inside the country’s hospitals.
Possibly the most telling of these was a Chinese virus database that was leaked last May. The database coverer 230 Chinese cities and had over 640,000 updates indicating the latitude, longitude and number of confirmed cases at locations on specific dates from February through April.
The leaked data indicated that the true scale of the coronavirus pandemic in China at the time was an order of magnitude larger than the around 84,000 that the country had reported.
Since then, the virus has seen resurgent outbreaks in a number of Chinese cities, including Beijing, as well as those in its northeastern region. Data collated by Johns Hopkins University shows that China currently has 88,206 cases and 4,676 deaths, as of reporting time. However, with what’s been revealed about how Chinese authorities are covering up their numbers, it’s highly likely that China’s actual caseload is much higher.
